Overview
William Hare Ltd (WHL) is committed to continuously improving the company’s sustainability performance, recognising that its operations have an effect on local, regional and global environments. The business secured a BES 6001 rating of Very Good for all the products which entered the certification process.
About
Established in 1945, William Hare Ltd (WHL) is the leading independent steel fabrication company in the UK. WHL has been associated with the steel frame design and construction of many landmark buildings in London, the UK, and internationally. The company has a 1,800-strong workforce based at multiple production and design facilities sites across the globe.
Background
WHL set out to secure BES 6001 certification for the structural steel products manufactured at its UK sites. It aims were to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability; measure the environmental, social and economic drivers of long term business performance; and seek competitive advantage in the marketplace.
The certification and audit process began in January 2012. A pre-assessment report was produced based on a range of documentary evidence that WHL provided. BRE Global auditors made two site visits in May and June to the company’s HQ in Bury, and production facilities at Bury and Scarborough.
These site visits enabled auditors to review the client’s responsible sourcing related processes. This was relevant both at the HQ function from where the various policies and procedures were developed and managed, through front-line manufacturing plants where the policies were implemented in the production process.
Benefits
By July 2012 the process was complete and WHL had secured a ‘Very Good’ BES 6001 certified rating for all the products which entered the certification process. The team is delighted with the outcome.
Securing this certification also helps WHL’s customers secure additional BREEAM credits for their own projects. Listing the BES 6001 certification on BRE GreenBookLive service enables customers to quickly and confidently establish the company’s sustainability credentials.
