Materials research services
Our expert research teams can help, whether you’re developing and testing new materials, or finding new uses for existing materials, from traditional materials to industrial by-products and recycling products. If you need to use materials in innovative ways to solve a problem, our materials research services can help with that too.
Our areas of materials research
New materials
We specialise in the suitability, durability and risks of innovative building materials, such as composites and new aggregates.
Industrial by-products and recycled materials
This can include by-products of manufacturing processes that would usually go to landfill, or materials generated by recycling such as gypsum from recycled plasterboard. We research the suitability of these materials for use in construction, their performance, cost effectiveness and environmental credentials.
Natural materials
We cover natural materials such as lime, hemp and wood fibre board.
Traditional materials
This includes the innovative use of traditional, natural and recycled construction materials. We also research improvements in the durability and sustainability of commonly used materials, such as metal, timber and concrete, and the conservation and repair of heritage building materials.
Low-impact materials
New materials are continuously being developed to reduce waste and the environmental impacts of manufacturing and construction. We examine their long-term impact and behaviour, and how they perform in scenarios such as fires. For more information, read our introduction to low-impact building materials.
Certification
We can assess and certify materials for performance, sustainability and responsible sourcing. Lists of certified materials are presented in RedBook Live and GreenBook Live.
